AC freezing up
AC freezing up in Winter Springs, Florida
Ice on the line set or the indoor coil means the coil is running below freezing, for one of two reasons: not enough air moving across it, or not enough refrigerant in it. A blocked filter, collapsed attic flex, a dirty blower wheel and an undersized return are all the first kind. Switch to fan only, let it thaw, then find out which.
Diagnosis
What is most likely wrong
| # | Cause | How common | What it looks like |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Blocked filter | Very common | Ice at the air handler after weeks of a grey filter; airflow weak at every register. |
| 2 | Low refrigerant charge | Very common | Ice starts at the suction line outside and works inward; cooling had been fading. |
| 3 | Undersized or blocked return air | Common | A single central return in a 1970s–80s house, a grille half covered by a sofa. |
| 4 | Collapsed or disconnected attic flex | Common | Ice plus one room with no airflow at all. |
| 5 | Dirty evaporator coil or blower wheel | Common | Years of bypass around a poorly fitted filter; airflow low even with a new one. |
| 6 | Failed blower motor or wrong speed tap | Less common | Blower runs slow or intermittently; ECM motor faults after a power surge. |
| 7 | Running it at night below about 65°F outside | Less common | A straight-cool system in January; the coil cannot stay above freezing. |
Before you call
What you can safely check yourself
- Turn cooling off and the fan to on. Let the ice melt fully — hours, not minutes. Put towels under the air handler.
- Replace the filter. If the old one is matted, that is probably the whole story.
- Check every supply register for airflow. A dead register points to a fallen duct run.
- Look at the return grille: is anything blocking it? Is it the only one in the house?
- If it ices again with a new filter and clear returns, stop running it and call. The next candidate is charge, and that needs gauges and a licence.
Where the licensed line is
Refrigerant, capacitors and the inside of an electrical panel are not homeowner jobs. A run capacitor holds a lethal charge after the disconnect is pulled. Refrigerant handling requires EPA Section 608 certification. And in Florida the work itself is regulated: an air-conditioning contractor licensed under Chapter 489 may replace, disconnect and reconnect the power wiring at the dedicated disconnect, and repair or replace breakers and fuses on dedicated HVAC circuits — s. 489.105(3). Verify any Florida contractor's licence at the DBPR licensee search before work begins.
In Winter Springs
Why this happens in this housing stock
In Winter Springs the return air is worth a real look, because so much of the 1970s and 80s stock here — 51.2% of the city — was built with a single central return and R-4.2 attic flex that has been up there ever since. That system is already near its airflow limit before a filter starts restricting it, which is why a dirty filter ices a coil here that would merely annoy a house with a proper return.
Streets where this is the whole diagnosis: Winter Springs Unit 4 (379 parcels, median 1977), North Orlando Townsite 4th Add Replat (183, 1971), Wildwood (291, 1983), Wedgewood Tennis Villas (233, 1984). A static pressure reading across the air handler is the measurement that settles it, and it is the one most often skipped. Test the ducts before you clean them.

Cost
What the fix typically costs
| Job | Researched range | What drives it |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnostic visit | $70–$200 | Usually credited. |
| Blower or condenser fan motor | $300–$800 | ECM at the top of the band. |
| Refrigerant leak repair | $200–$1,500+ | Finding the leak is most of the cost. |
| Evaporator coil | $700–$2,500+ | On a system past twelve years, weigh against replacement. |
| Return-air upgrade or duct sealing | $500–$2,500 | The permanent fix in a single-return house. |

Read this before you use any number on this page
These are researched market ranges, not our prices and not a quote. The dollar figures come from published third-party cost guides — named and linked at the foot of the page — plus one figure that is not a range at all: the City of Winter Springs’ own published mechanical permit fee. They are here so you can tell whether a quote you have been handed is in the ordinary range for this work. No two houses in Winter Springs cost the same to do, and we do not quote a job before we have seen it.
