Costs

AC compressor replacement cost in Winter Springs, Florida

A compressor replacement runs a researched $1,800 to $2,800 (HomeGuide), or $1,000 to $3,000 or more nationally, against $6,000 to $9,500 for a new 3-ton system in the Orlando metro. On R-22 equipment it is rarely worth doing; on a strip-heat house the Duke rebate tips it toward a heat pump changeout.

These are researched market ranges, not our prices and not a quote. The dollar figures come from published third-party cost guides — named and linked at the foot of the page — plus one figure that is not a range at all: the City of Winter Springs’ own published mechanical permit fee. They are here so you can tell whether a quote you have been handed is in the ordinary range for this work. No two houses in Winter Springs cost the same to do, and we do not quote a job before we have seen it.

The arithmetic

The decision point

Compressor replacement against the alternative

Compressor replacement$1,800–$2,800HomeGuide. This Old House’s national band is wider: $1,000–$3,000+.
Full system replacement, 3 ton$6,000–$9,500Orlando-metro guides. Plus $180 City permit on $8,000.
Duke rebate on a strip-heat houseup to $1,000Only if the Home Energy Check happened first. Not available on a compressor swap.

A compressor swap at $2,800 against a $7,000 changeout is 40% of the price of new, on a system that keeps the old coil, the old refrigerant and the old warranty position. That ratio is where most of these decisions get made.

How to decide

Refrigerant, warranty, strip heat

Three questions decide it, in order. What refrigerant is it? An R-22 system is original equipment from before 2010; a compressor swap on one is money into a dead end. An R-410A system can still be legally repaired and recharged — the EPA is not restricting repair components — but the refrigerant is being phased down and a large sealed-system repair on a fifteen-year-old system is a worse bet than it was. Is it under warranty? Under s. 559.957, Fla. Stat., a manufacturer’s HVAC warranty runs from the date of installation by a licensed contractor and cannot be voided for a registration card that was never posted — check before you assume it lapsed. Is the house on strip heat? If so, a heat pump changeout puts up to $1,000 of Duke money on the table that a compressor swap does not.

Where this lands in Winter Springs: the 2000s subdivisions — Parkstone, Avery Park, Barrington Estates, Heritage Park — are the first R-410A cohort and are around twenty years old now. The 1970s–80s half of the city is mostly on its third or fourth condenser, and the question there is usually not the compressor but the strip heat behind it.

The order matters

Duke Energy requires a free Home Energy Check completed within the previous 24 months, before the equipment is installed. Replace first and apply afterwards and the claim is denied. For an emergency replacement Duke allows the Check within 12 months after installation instead — the only route back once a compressor has already failed.

  1. Home Energy Check first. Free, from Duke.
  2. Then the recommendation it produces.
  3. Then the permitted install by a licensed contractor of your choosing.
  4. Then the application, through Duke’s Florida portal.
