AC short cycling

AC short cycling in Winter Springs, Florida

An air conditioner that starts, runs a few minutes and stops, over and over, is short cycling. The common causes are an oversized system, a blocked filter or iced coil, a thermostat placed near a supply register, a low refrigerant charge tripping the pressure switch, or a failing capacitor. Oversizing is the one the parcel file predicts.

Diagnosis

What is most likely wrong

Likely causes, ordered by how often they turn out to be the answer.
#CauseHow commonWhat it looks like
1Oversized systemVery commonCools the thermostat in minutes, leaves the far rooms and the humidity; runs all day in short bursts.
2Blocked filter or iced coilVery commonAirflow collapses, the coil freezes, the low-pressure switch stops it, it thaws, repeat.
3Thermostat location or faultCommonStat on a wall above a supply register or in the sun satisfies early.
4Low refrigerant chargeCommonLow-pressure cut-out cycles the compressor; cooling was already fading.
5Failing run capacitor or contactorCommonStarts hard, stalls, tries again; the hum-then-click pattern.
6Compressor overheating and tripping its overloadLess commonDirty condenser coil or a failing compressor; runs, stops, waits, runs.
7Condensate float switch bouncingLess commonMarginal drain; the switch trips on the water surge each cycle.

Before you call

What you can safely check yourself

  • Time a cycle. Under ten minutes running with the house not at set point is short cycling.
  • Filter, and any ice at the air handler. Fan on, cooling off, until it is clear.
  • Where is the thermostat? If it is in a sunny hall or right under a supply, that is a candidate.
  • Condenser coil clear? Fan spinning freely?
  • If the house was recently re-quoted and the new system is a size bigger than the old one, the size is the fault. Ask for the Manual J.

Where the licensed line is

Refrigerant, capacitors and the inside of an electrical panel are not homeowner jobs. A run capacitor holds a lethal charge after the disconnect is pulled. Refrigerant handling requires EPA Section 608 certification. And in Florida the work itself is regulated: an air-conditioning contractor licensed under Chapter 489 may replace, disconnect and reconnect the power wiring at the dedicated disconnect, and repair or replace breakers and fuses on dedicated HVAC circuits — s. 489.105(3). Verify any Florida contractor's licence at the DBPR licensee search before work begins.

In Winter Springs

Why this happens in this housing stock

Oversizing is the Winter Springs case because of how the tonnage got chosen. The citywide median living area is 1,827 sq ft, which the 500-square-feet-per-ton rule of thumb rounds to four tons and a load calculation usually puts at 3 or 3.5. On the small end — Wildwood at 1,248 sq ft, Casa Park Villas at 1,088 to 1,156 — a three-ton box installed because “that is what was there” satisfies the thermostat in ten minutes and never pulls the water out of the air. Cold and clammy is the oversized signature. Why the load calculation matters.

The filter-and-ice case is the 1970s–80s single-return case, which is 51.2% of the city. Freezing up, in full.

Read this before you use any number on this page

These are researched market ranges, not our prices and not a quote. The dollar figures come from published third-party cost guides — named and linked at the foot of the page — plus one figure that is not a range at all: the City of Winter Springs’ own published mechanical permit fee. They are here so you can tell whether a quote you have been handed is in the ordinary range for this work. No two houses in Winter Springs cost the same to do, and we do not quote a job before we have seen it.
